What Are Xylem And Phloem : Know The Science Fact

WHAT ARE XYLEM AND PHLOEM

TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN PLANT

INTRODUCTION-

Hello readers, today I would like to tell you an interesting fact story about plants in my article “What are xylem and phloem”.

But before going ahead about this concept, I would like to tell you, about the life of living beings on our planet.

I hope my readers of all ages of the group will enjoy this article, whether you are a student, a homemaker, or in any other professional life, you will get to know about it and it will enhance your knowledge.

It can be beneficial for your kids, while you are telling the stories. The fact-based story will update them and make them more curious about the exploration of things in different fields.

In my article “What are xylem and phloem”, my concern is to enhance your knowledge about the topic, to emphasise for thinking about this perspective of the plant. I would not like to go deep. I would like to make the concept clear to you.

WHAT IS ECOSYSTEM-

As I have told you that before going to the main fact, I will make you understand about the living beings and their related things. So I would like to give a brief idea about the term Ecosystem.

We all live on this Earth planet. You all know that living beings include plants, animals, human beings and organisms. On the other hand, non-living beings include water, air, soil, land, rock etc.

Here all the living things and non-living things are existing on this planet and make different types of ecosystems, which are of course natural and artificial ecosystems.

A natural ecosystem, which is given by nature, includes aquatic, terrestrial/land ecosystems, and an artificial or man-made ecosystem includes a pond, park etc., where all the living beings and non-living beings occur and are interdependent for each other.

You must have been updated about the food web and food chain, which shows the strong dependency on living things.

If you don’t know about it, kindly let me know, so that I will write the next interesting article about it. You can see at the bottom of the article for the proper definition of the Ecosystem.

Now come to the point about the translocations of the plants.

TRANSLOCATION/TRANSPORT-

If you already know about the living being. You know very well that without eating food we can’t survive anymore.

But have you ever been considered the plants? After all, they are also living organisms.

They get hungry and thirsty. How do they eat food, drink water, and how do they excrete out?.

This is strange. Right?.

We care about our loved ones in our family. Even we give food and are we curious to give the food to our pets and street animals either Dogs, Cow etc. We think they are hungry, even we spread the food grains and water to the flying bird because we know they will be thirsty and hungry.

But for the name of our surrounding trees and plants, we only know that those are essential for us. Because we take oxygen and we should never cut them.

If we cut one tree then we have to plant four trees in place of them. Moreover the major point, we know that they make our environment clean and pollution-free….

Right?

But any of them don’t think about their food habits how do they eat and drink, even they don’t have hands and mouth.

Just because they don’t cry and they don’t tell us, they don’t shout, they don’t hurt us, they don’t bite us and they don’t kill us, we just do ignore them and don’t think much about them.

THE FACT YOU SHOULD KNOW-

The article” what are xylem and phloem” tells you some facts pointwise, which you should get to know.

what are xylem and phloem

YES, WE ALL KNOW THAT WE WATER THE PLANTS AND PLANTS DRINK IT.

BUT HOW?

Actually, the root part, which is under the soil, contains tiny root hairs. These root hairs absorb the water, which is sprinkled in the soil molecules.

We also provide natural and artificial fertilizers like cow dung and urea respectively to the soil, so the plants can uptake different types of minerals and nutrients from the soil.

BUT THE QUESTION IS HOW?.

The term “XYLEM” is a very important part of this topic.

Yes, it is the “XYLEM”, through which trees can uptake the minerals and water from the soil.

There is a network of xylem tubes in the plants.

Xylem transport is unidirectional.

Actually, the xylem is that particular part of the plant, which carries water and minerals from the root to the various(aerial) other parts of the plant. It is a tube-like structure.

Xylem is known as vascular tissue. Tissues are the groups of cells.

The water enters the plant through root hair, which goes to the cortex region (cortex is the part of the root, which we can see when we cut its thin slice and place it over the microscope ).

Basically an anatomical part, we can see the different parts/layers of the root cell, and the cortex is one of the layers/parts of it.

Through the cortex, water enters the xylem. From where water ascends in the xylem to the leaves. After reaching the leaves, water is lost by evaporation from the surface of mesophyll cells before diffusing out through the stomata.

(Mesophyll cells are the part of the layers of the leaf, when we see the anatomy of the leaf, under the microscope).

(Stomata is the smallest pores in the leaf, from where water is released into the atmosphere by evaporation).

The loss of water from the surface of the plant by evaporation from the stem and leaves is called TRANSPIRATION.
what are xylem and phloem

The flow of water from the roots to the stomata forms the transpiration stream.

Approximately 99 per cent of the water absorbed by the average plant is lost.

When water releases through the stomata pores of the leaf during the process of transpiration, it cools down to the leaf, especially on hot summer days and protects delicate leaf tissues from drying up.

When excess water has been uptaken by plants then excess water is also excreted out through stomata by the process of transpiration.

The movement of substances through vascular, tissues of plants is called translocation. Xylem translocates mainly water and mineral salts from the roots to the aerial parts of the plant.

    THE SECOND FACT

The second fact you should get to know about the plants regarding this topic, transportation and translocation.

WE ALL KNOW THAT LEAVES MAKE FOOD BY THE PROCESS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

PHOTOSYNTHESIS IS THE PROCESS, IN WHICH LEAVES MAKE THE FOOD IN THE PRESENCE OF SUNLIGHT AND CARBON DIOXIDE.

NOW THE QUESTION IS-

HOW DOES THIS FOOD TRANSFER FROM LEAVES TO OTHER PARTS OF PLANTS?

So” PHLOEM” is the other vascular tissue of the plants, which carries the food, manufactured by leaves to the other needed parts of the plant.

Phloem translocates a variety of organic and inorganic solutes, mainly from the leaves or storage organs to others parts of the plant. Phloem transport is bi-directional.

SOME IMPORTANT POINTS TO LEARN-

Roots absorb water and dissolved minerals from the soil.

Water and minerals are transported upward from roots to shoots as xylem sap.

Transpiration, the loss of water from leaves(mostly through stomata) creates a force within leaves that pulls xylem sap upward.

Leaves exchange Carbon dioxide and Oxygen through stomata, taking in the carbon dioxide that provides carbon for photosynthesis and expelling Oxygen.

Sugar is produced by photosynthesis in the leaves.

Sugar is transported as phloem sap to roots and other parts of the plant.

Phloem transport food and water.

Roots exchange gases with the air spaces of soil, taking in Oxygen and discharging Carbon dioxide. The gas exchange supports the breakdown of sugar (cellular respiration ) in root cells.

CONCLUSION-

So my readers now you are able to know how the transport system works in plants by two vascular tissues xylem and phloem through reading the article “What are xylem and phloem”.

1)  Xylem is capable to carry water and minerals to the parts of the plant.

2)  Phloem is capable of carrying the food from leaves and other storage parts to the other needed parts.
Thank You.
